In recent years, bananas have become more than just a popular fruit in Vietnamese households—they’ve emerged as a key export commodity contributing significantly to the country’s agricultural export portfolio. According to 2024 trade data, Vietnam ranks as the 9th largest banana exporter in the world, with an export value of approximately USD 378.1 million, accounting for 2.5% of global market share.
Rapid Growth in Global Banana Exports
This impressive ranking marks a major milestone, especially as Vietnam has only recently begun large-scale, structured investment in banana farming. Compared to 2023, the country’s banana exports grew by over 21%, climbing from USD 310 million to 378 million. This growth allowed Vietnam to surpass traditional banana-exporting countries such as Thailand and Colombia.
The surge is attributed to the expansion of large-scale plantations, adoption of modern farming techniques, and the government’s push for region codes and traceability systems to meet strict international standards.

Expanding Beyond China: Japan, South Korea, EU, and More
Besides China, the world's largest banana importing market is also the most important destination for Vietnamese bananas. Vietnamese bananas are increasingly making their way to high-demand markets such as Japan, South Korea, the UAE, the United States, and the European Union. These markets are known for their strict food safety, sustainability, and quality requirements—challenges that push Vietnamese growers and exporters to upgrade across the board.

Competitive Advantages and Growth Opportunities
Vietnam benefits from a tropical climate, low production costs, and improved trade access through various Free Trade Agreements (FTAs). Key banana-growing regions such as Dong Nai, Long An, Quang Tri, and Lao Cai are being scaled up and standardized for export quality.
Yet, challenges remain. The banana industry still lacks high-quality, disease-resistant varieties and must improve post-harvest handling, traceability systems, and branding. Processed banana products and value-added exports also remain underdeveloped.
Looking Ahead: Toward a Billion-Dollar Industry?
With robust momentum and growing demand worldwide, Vietnam’s banana industry has the potential to reach USD 500 million in export value in the near future. Long-term, by expanding market reach and sustaining quality, Vietnam could move into the top 5 global banana exporters.
